Let me tell you about my friend Rohit.
Rohit was 26. Engineering degree. Job at MNC. ₹18 LPA. Family proud.
Rohit quit. Joined NGO. ₹4 LPA. Family shocked.
Rohit again switched. Startup. ₹30 LPA + stress + no weekends.
Last month I met him. He looked tired. Said one line: “Bhai, I don’t know who I’m working for anymore.” You know that feeling? When paycheck is fat but soul feels empty? Or when work feels good but rent feels scary?
That’s the exact problem Mundaka Upanishad solved 3000 years ago.
With a story of 2 birds.
If 1 story could fix Rohit’s confusion, can it fix yours?
The story: 2 birds on the same treeImagine a big peepal tree. Life.On one branch sit 2 birds. Same size. Same color. Always together.
Bird 1: Keeps eating fruits. Sweet fruit = happy, dances. Sour fruit = sad, cries. Whole day busy tasting. Never looks up.
Bird 2: Just sits. Calm. Watching. Doesn’t eat. Doesn’t react. Just witnesses. After some time, Bird 1 gets tired. Stomach upset from too many fruits. Looks up. Sees Bird 2 — peaceful, glowing. Bird 1 hops closer. The moment it comes near Bird 2, all hunger stops. No more sweet-sour chase. Just peace.
Mundaka Upanishad Chapter 3, Verse 1 says:
“Two birds, friends, cling to the same tree. One eats fruit, the other looks on without eating.” Then Rishi explains:
Bird 1 = You when you chase experiences.
Bird 2 = Your real Self, Atman. Tree = Your life/body.
Which bird are you feeding 8 hours a day at work?Money vs Purpose: The modern version of 2 birds. Let’s decode it for careers.
Bird 1 = Money Bird
Job for salary, title, LinkedIn updates.
Fruit = appraisal, bonus, promotion. Sweet = you post “Humbled” on LinkedIn.
Sour = you update resume at 2am.Nothing wrong with Bird 1. We need money. Rent won’t pay with purpose.
Bird 2 = Purpose Bird
Work for meaning, impact, growth. Fruit = “Did I help someone today?” Sweet = inner smile. Sour = still peaceful, because you know why you work.
Problem starts when Bird 1 eats non-stop and forgets Bird 2 exists.
Research backs this: Harvard Study of Adult Development, 85 years long. Found: People who chased only money/fame at age 25 were unhappier at age 50. People who chased meaningful work + relationships lived longer, healthier.Mundaka Upanishad said same thing without Harvard budget.
When was last time your work gave you “inner smile” even with no appraisal? How Rohit got trapped: Feeding only Bird 1.
Let’s go back to Rohit.
Job 1: MNC ₹18 LPA
Bird 1 super happy. New phone, trips, EMIs. Bird 2 silent. After 18 months, Rohit said “Work feels empty. I’m just Excel + PPT.”
Job 2: NGO ₹4 LPA
Bird 2 happy. “I’m helping kids.” But Bird 1 starving. Rent, family pressure, no savings. After 14 months, Rohit said “Purpose doesn’t pay bills.”
Job 3: Startup ₹30 LPA
Rohit tried to feed both birds. But 14-hour days = no time to feel purpose. Bird 1 overfed, Bird 2 ignored again. He realized: Problem isn’t job. Problem is he never checked which bird was hungry.
Are you switching jobs but carrying same confusion inside?3 questions to know which bird you’re starving.
Don’t quit your job yet. Do this 10-minute test. Paper-pen works best.
The Monday Morning Test
Imagine Monday 9am. No salary for next 3 months. Would you still do your current work for free?
Yes = Bird 2 is alive.
No = Bird 1 is solo driver.
The 80-Year-Old Test
You’re 80. Grandkid asks: “What did you do in life?”
Will you say job title + CTC? Or will you tell stories of people you helped?
Title answer = Bird 1. Story answer = Bird 2.
The Energy Test
After 8 hours work, do you feel drained or charged?
Drained every day = Bird 1 overeating. Charged sometimes = Bird 2 getting fed.
Score:
3 Bird 2 answers = You’re balanced.
2-3 Bird 1 answers = Time to wake Bird 2. Rohit did this test. Got 3 Bird 1 answers. That’s why no job felt right.
What’s your score? Be honest. No one’s watching. How to feed both birds without quitting — Upanishad’s practical fix. Mundaka Upanishad doesn’t say “quit job, become monk”. Rishi was practical.
Solution: Bird 1 eats, Bird 2 watches. Together.
Step 1: Give Bird 2 daily 20 minutes
Before work, 20 min for Bird 2. Meditation, journal, walk, read Gita. No phone. No goals.
Why? Bird 2 is silent. If you don’t schedule it, Bird 1’s noise will eat all day.
Science: Stanford study says 20 min morning reflection increases work satisfaction 27%.
Step 2: Add “Why” to Bird 1’s work
Current job boring? Ask: “Who am I helping through this?”
Excel sheet = helps manager decide = helps company pay 500 salaries.
PPT = trains juniors = helps their career.
Rishi's calls this “Yajna bhav” — work as offering. Bird 1 eats same fruit, but Bird 2 watches. Fruit tastes better.
Step 3: 70-30 Rule
70% time = feed Bird 1. Pay bills, skills, growth. No guilt.
30% time = feed Bird 2. Weekend teaching, side project, volunteering, writing.
If ratio flips, Bird 1 starves = anxiety. If Bird 2 starves = emptiness. Rohit applied this. Kept startup job. Started teaching coding to kids every Saturday 2 hours. Bird 2 alive. No job switch needed.5 signs you’re stuck in Bird 1 loop.
Sunday night dread: You hate Mondays not because of work, but because Bird 2 knows it’s meaningless.
LinkedIn jealousy: Someone’s promotion hurts more than it should. Bird 1 compares fruits. Shopping = therapy: You buy stuff to feel “sweet fruit” because work gives only sour. Can’t sit alone 10 min: Silence scares you. Bird 2 wants to talk, but Bird 1 keeps eating.
“After this goal, I’ll be happy”: Next CTC, next role, next city. Fruit-chase never ends. Mundaka Upanishad says Bird 1’s hunger never ends.
Only way = look up at Bird 2.
But what if I really need money right now? Good question.
Rishi isn’t against money. Upanishad says “Artha” = money is 1 of 4 life goals. Dharma = purpose, Kama = joy, Moksha = freedom. Problem = When Artha becomes ONLY goal. Tree falls.
Practical rule: If you’re <30 or have loans/family load, feed Bird 1 first. No shame.
But 20 min daily for Bird 2 keeps you human. So when money comes, you won’t feel empty like Rohit. If you’re 35+ with savings, start shifting to 60-40.
Bird 2 needs more food as you age.
The last thing Rohit learned. Last week Rohit texted me: “I’m still at startup. But I’m not angry anymore.”What changed? He said: “I look up at Bird 2 daily. Even during meetings.”Meaning: When boss shouts, Bird 1 wants to quit. Bird 2 watches and says “This is temporary fruit. You’re still okay.”
That gap = peace.
Mundaka Upanishad’s final line: “When the seer sees Bird 2, his sorrow ends.” You don’t have to choose money OR purpose. You have to choose awareness. Feed both birds. But let Bird 2 lead.
What to do next: Tonight, do 10-min test. Which bird are you starving?
Tomorrow morning, 20 min for Bird 2. No phone. Just sit, breathe, ask “Why do I work?”
